Doing business today is nearly impossible without the use of information technology. In most enterprises, IT has become an integral part of the business and is fundamental to support, sustain and grow the business. Increasingly, top management is realising the significant impact that information technology (IT) can have on the success of the enterprise. While corporate governance developments is driven by the need for transparency on enterprise risks and the protection of shareholder value, the pervasive use of technology has created a critical dependency on IT which requires a specific focus on IT governance.
IT governance is a management framework and set of disciplines that ensure the organization¡¯s information technology (IT) supports the strategy and objectives of the organization. The main goal of IT governance is to establish structures and processes to ensure that IT aligns with the company's business strategy, risks are properly managed, and that IT delivers value to the users. IT Services are vital to all organizations today; providing the core infrastructure and applications to support an organization's business.

IT governance, like other governance subjects, is the responsibility of the boards and executives. It is not an isolated discipline or activity, but rather is integral to enterprise governance.
Boards and executive management need to provide the leadership, organisational structures and processes that ensure that the enterprise's IT sustains and extends the enterprise's strategies and objectives, whilst ensuring that expectations for IT are met and IT risks are mitigated.
Critical to the success of these structures and processes is effective communication among all parties based on constructive relationships, a common language and understanding as well as a shared commitment to address the issues.
